If you wish to point a domain address that you have to a different domain or subdomain, the best way to do that would be to use a CNAME record. By setting up such a record, the domain name being redirected loses all of its records (A, MX, and so forth) and instead, it takes the A record of the domain address it's directed to. By doing this, if you use a web design service by some provider that gives you a subdomain, you can use an actual domain name and not only will it be pointed to the website which you have created, but it will also be displayed in the Internet browser address bar at all times. Alternative possible uses of a CNAME record are to redirect all the targeted traffic from different subdomains to their main domain address, or to use the webmail service of your hosting company by using webmail.your-doman.com, for instance. The latter will work only by creating a CNAME record for a subdomain because this type of a record set up for the main domain address makes it impossible to use e-mail addresses.

CNAME Records in Cloud Hosting

Setting up a CNAME record using our Linux cloud packages is quite easy. Our in-house built Hepsia Control Panel features a section devoted to the DNS records of your domain names, so you can create a new CNAME record for any domain or subdomain hosted within your account in only a few easy steps. You will find a video tutorial in the same section in which you can see the process first-hand. This feature gives you various options - if you set up a company website on our end, for example, the employees can use their emails with the company domain, not with the address of our mail server. If you wish to create a site by using a different company which offers online web design services, you can easily redirect a domain name hosted here and use it for the site. Last, but not least, if you have a web-based store and you have a billing system for http://your-domain.com and/or an SSL certificate, you can create a CNAME record for the www subdomain and direct it to the main domain, so all your customers are going to be forwarded to a secure URL.

CNAME Records in Semi-dedicated Hosting

Managing DNS records usually seems a difficult task to people with less experience, but the Hepsia hosting Control Panel, which comes with each Linux semi-dedicated hosting package we offer, is very simple to use. If you need to create a CNAME record for any purpose, all you will need to do will be to choose the domain address or subdomain that you need, pick the type of record, which will be CNAME in this case, then type the value i.e. the domain name or subdomain you are forwarding to. The procedure is quite simple and you can create the record in the DNS Records section of the CP. Within the hour the new record is going to be completely active and within a few hours it will propagate worldwide. If you're not sure what you have to do, we've prepared an in depth help article and a short video tutorial regarding how to go about creating a CNAME record and they are both located in that very same section of Hepsia. Naturally, you can also get in touch with us for assistance at any moment.
